MATCH REPORT - Saturday 1st XI

Blackheath v Ashford on Saturday 15th May 2004 at Ashford

Blackheath won the toss and elected to bat on a decent looking pitch. After being 13 for 2, Blackheath recovered to 91 for 2, before a terrible collapse occurred against some average bowlers. Never before has a team been dismissed to so many full-tosses and half-trackers. Only 3 players made it to double figures, with new boy Mike O'Mahony making an excellent 61 on his league debut for the club. Mike Chase made a hard fought 31 before hitting a full-toss straight down deep square's throat and Dallas McDermott top edged another full toss after making 18. It was a very frustrating afternoon with the bat and we should have scored around 200.
We then had to bowl for 30 minutes before tea, and another new boy, namely Ross "Fastballs" McCauliffe, went berserk and took 3 wickets leaving Ashford reeling at 28 for 3 at tea. Ross bowled quick on a wicket with not much bounce and had some of the top order wishing they weren't going out to bat. After tea, McDermott dropped a chance in slips, which would have seen Ashford at 40 for 4. Surrey Championship's leading run scorer, C Evans, and the batsmen who was dropped, each scored 52no to steer Ashford to a 7 wicket victory.
We have put this game behind us and move on to next week at home against Thames Ditton.
