Wonersh proved amiable hosts for the first game of the Sunday XI's season yesterday, an enjoyable contest which ebbed and flowed before ending in an honourable draw. The new captain started well in calling correctly at the toss and, to an audible sigh of relief from a number of sore heads in the bowling department, choosing to bat. Despite the unseasonal sunshine, the pitch and outfield were slow, and Blackheath stumbled to 50 for 5 due to some nagging bowling and suicidal running. Horsting (23) and Colin Rhodes (42 not out) steadied the ship, before Mark Rhodes was promoted up the order (credit to Alistair Purt for making way) and decided the best way to deal with the muddy outfield was to avoid it entirely. He launched four big sixes on the way to 55 not out, closing on a respectable 177 for 6 at tea.

Wonersh started well in reply, and though James Smallwood took his first wicket for Blackheath with a devilish second-bounce yorker, they looked favourites as they strolled past 100 for the loss of just two wickets. But Horsting ended a dangerous third wicket stand, picking up two wickets in an accurate second spell, ably supported by a brace from PC Tayar, swinging the ball cunningly and bubbling with all the confidence to be expected from a star of Police Camera Action. Wonersh gave up the chase, and ended on the back foot at 150 for 6 as the overs ran out.
