| A victory in the last over against Chertsey on Saturday 8th July was a much-needed change of fortune for the 1st XI after three successive defeats, but it wasn't plain sailing. After stand-in captain Bob Lowe lost the toss we were inserted on a green track and, in spite of a typically aggressive 42 from Mike Chase and a "solid" 20 from Paul Dench, we slumped to 104 for 7 off 30 overs. However, a stand of 46 for the 8th wicket between Clive Ennis (34) and Eddie Henderson (12) followed by some dour defence from Graham Webb (14) saw us recover to 174 all out from 54.1 overs. At 71 for 1 Chertsey were cruising to an easy victory, but wickets began to fall steadily to Graham Webb (4-36 from 14) and Duane Botha (3-38 from 12.1) until 20 runs were required off the last 2 overs with 3 wickets remaining. Chertsey continued to "go for it" but they lost 2 wickets in the penultimate over, and their attempts to suvive the last over were thwarted by Mr. Botha, who only needed one ball to rattle stumps of the last man and secure victory. | |
