The Blackheath challenge for the Admiral Dunlop trophy, which had sailed majestically through the first two rounds without a ball being bowled, struck an iceberg in the semi-final at Cranleigh last night (14th July). We were inserted on a "sticky" Cranleigh wicket and then presented with the unnerving sight of Ben Chant's brother (a useful left arm spinner !?!?!) bowling at us from the pavilion end. Although we scored steadily, Duane Botha in particular hitting several impressive boundaries, we also lost wickets steadily and at the start of the last over we had a paltry 87 for 9 on the board. Cometh the hour cometh Gordon "Ultimate Destroyer" Dudley, who used every pennyworth of his �40 bat to lash the Cranleigh bowling for 4, 6, and 4 in successive deliveries, leaving us on 99 for 9 at the close. The Cranleigh reply started uncertainly and they were 5 for 1 after two overs. However, their overseas (Australian) then took a liking to Charlie Card, whose first delivery pitched on leg stump shortly before smashing through the lounge window of a house near Cranleigh High Street. After that we were never in the hunt and by the time Clive Ennis eventually trapped the Aussie LBW they only needed 10 to win from 5 overs. The end came from the first ball of the hapless Card's second over, a 7 wicket win for Cranleigh with 3.7 overs to spare.
