A sunny, early-September day, a smattering of spectators beyond the babbling brook, and an unpredictable track. This was the backdrop for the latest victory of Blackheath Sunday 2nd XI, playing away to Abinger Hammer. Despite having only 8 players at the start of the match, Blackheath, fielding first, started strongly. Pete "Like-It-Crofty" Horsting tore the opposition batting attack to pieces. His five wicket tally was testament to devastating leg spin, aeriated flight of the ball (leading to batsman sun-blindness) and guile. Oh, and a couple of pies thrown in for good measure. With the ubiquitous Bradley �Super-Bad� Baker adding his trademark consistency going up the hill (up-hill being his favoured mode of attack) the Abinger batting was decimated rapidly to 40 for 8 wickets. Whispers of beer-matches hung on the lips of the expectant crowd. Then he got bored and went home. Nevertheless play continued without the fickle spectator. The Abinger innings (72 all out) was wrapped up by the ever-venomous Ashley Baker, returning from a short sabbatical, and Karim. Special recognition has to go to Karim �Safe-Hands� Tayar for his consistency in holding three catches produced by the bowling. Straight out to bat for Blackheath. The team were raring to knock this total off, with scant regard for their own safety, on what was a very lively wicket. Ashley Baker and Velu started strongly as openers. However, the track soon claimed Baker (A) as the first Blackheath victim. Fortunately, the stoic Jem Williams, arriving as a �Tea-watchman�, replaced him at the crease. Following tea Velu and the resolute Jemster began to stand up to the unpredictable pitch. Runs had to be ground out in the face of some popping deliveries. Simon Jones and Baker (B) had their chance and were soon swiping and swatting respectively, and although started promisingly, were soon undone. Thankfully Williams put in an Atherton-style innings, playing through the team, finally falling victim to an unplayable delivery just five runs short of victory. The stage was set for Karim and Isabelle Duncan to bring the game home, which they duly did. So, shortly after 6pm, Blackheath were victorious. Whilst Abinger Hammer were left to reflect on the match-winning performances from the depleted Blackheath team that had defeated them. A deserved victory that buoys up the team as it approaches the two final home games of the season. Tally Ho!!

Don't worry Pedros Sceptor Horsting De Paux, I've got your number and the team is now aware of your rather dodgy tactics!!! We expect to be refreshed suitably after Sunday's game with copious quantities of intoxicating liquor!!!
