Denmark - pah! Bring on Brazil - and so with Blackheath U 11 Cricket Club........Farncombe - it was never in doubt! Yes I'm happy to report that the boys done well on Sunday beating the weather and the opposition fair and square. Once again it was the fielding side of our game that stood out, taking 9 wickets, including 2 spectacular run outs and 4 excellent catches. It takes nerve to hold on to catches in a game, and I was really pleased to see that we took all but one of the chances we were given - including a catch behind by Craig Collins off the first ball of the day, a really high ball that hung in the air for an age before being grabbed gratefully by Sam Gummer, and two almost identical shots to Mid On taken ably by captain for the day Charlie Cox. Bowling was in the main very tight, and of the 9 bowlers used, 6 got at least one wicket - the day's best figures going to Sam G (2 for 10 off 2 overs) and Tim Baxter, tidy as ever (1 for 2 off 2). Extra's did play their part, though as we shared the bowling out so much this is perhaps not surprising, as it does take a couple of balls to get into a rhythm - but thanks to all those wickets, we had a total of only 217 to beat. Although in the end we won by a convincing margin, posting 256 for the loss of only 3 wickets, I still feel we could do better at the crease. Of those 56 runs, over half were extras......and we really should have been a bit more agressive on the loose bowling. However a win is a win, and batting honours once again to Tom Melhuish who managed the top score of 9, and Chris Hodges - second top scorer with 7 including the only boundary of the innings on a large pitch with a very damp outfield. Call me biased, but I'm giving Man of the Match this week to Charlie, who captained with authority, took two good catches, a wicket off his own bowling, and nearly managed an innings without getting out!
