The original pavilion

The previous pavilion was originally opened in 1957 and served it's purpose very well for over 50 years. Over that period is was constantly extended to suit current requirements. Eventually, the club realised that it had been extended enough over the years and rather than adding yet another extension, the pavilion committee lead by Nick Harrison and the Chairman, Graham Webb, decided it was time to show more ambition and start again with a completely new pavilion. |
Design

The inspiration for the pavilion design came from the drawings by the eminent Arts and Crafts architect Charles Harrison Townsend (1851-1928). These designs for Blackheath were published in The Studio in 1896, a magazine with an international readership. | |
| The design was progressed into final design by members of the club committee and the architectural services of Sarah Sullivan using traditional methods such as hand drawn sketches and water colours, whilst conforming to the current ECB TS5 guidelines for pavilions and clubhouses. |

The traditional approach was also backed up by computer models created by Simon Jones which enabled the team to review many alternative design solutions and present options to club members and local residents to review before the plans were submitted for planning permission in 2011 and permission was granted in February 2012 - see the Surrey Ad front page article announcing the news. | |
Finance
The overall budget of the pavilion was estimated to be in the region of �400,000 and under the guidance of the club treasurer, Richard Brocksom, the club decided that it could be afforded through the combination of grants, personal donations, traditional fundraising and a plan to repay the surplus over a manageable period. Ultimately, a generous grant from the ECB was secured and the brave decision was made to demolish the old pavilion at the end of the 2012 season and to build the new pavilion over the winter to be ready for start of the new season in April 2013.
Construction
Shown below is a brief overview of the pavilion construction progress but there are many more photos of the struggles to build this during the wettest winter in memory on our construction photo gallery. Many thanks to our main contractor, Bryan Molloy and his team who worked throughout the winter in rain and snow to construct the building on time and on budget!

The bulldozers moved in at the end of the 2012 season on 24th September - the first Monday after the last weekend of fixtures! The construction project moved very quickly with the old pavilion pretty well totally demolished by the end of the first day. | ||

27th November, and the outfield is getting seriously muddy. | ||
| It's now 23rd March and the wet weather has turned the outfield into a quagmire and there is less than a month to the first game. |

Just a week later on 29th March, it's Good Friday and the ground is drying out and a good turn out for our working party means good progress on the landscaping around the building. | ||
| After an early morning start with a light dusting of snow on the outfield, we were joined by the NatWest CricketForce team on 5th April to lay 600m� of turf and paint the exterior render, as reported in the Surrey Ad. |

| It's 20th April, 2013 and the pavilion is open to host it's first match - a 2nd XI victory against Badshot Lea. |

The pavilion was opened on Friday, 3rd May 2013 by our President Peter Herbert and officially named the "Tangley Pavilion". | ||
